Unfinished Blog Post Overload

Oh dear. Not only am I suffering from a serious case of Unfinished Object Overload and Fabric Stash Expansionitis, I'm also down with a touch of Unfinished Blog Post Overload, as you can see above. Fellow bloggers, does this ever happen to you?

In addition to the 66 posts I've actually published in the month since I launched this little blog, I have 30 other pieces in various stages of completion. Some are just titles or ideas; others are elaborate manifestos, essays or tutorials in need of editing or completion. The problem? It turns out sewing and style blogging is just WAY too much fun!

But I'm a tired pregnant lady with too little time for all my bloggy ambitions, and I have come to accept the fact that some of these posts will forever remain unwritten, just as some garments will forever remain unsewn.

Here's some of what I have planned for you lovely readers if you stick with me... (with likelihood of completion in parentheses):

  • "Sewing at a Moving Target: Maternity Style Strategies." My pregnancy-modification magnum opus, an illustrated compilation of various strategies and methods for maternity sewing, with notes on adapting non-maternity patterns and the potential for post-preggo wear for various styles. (Fair to middling).
  • "Polka Dot Crush: New Vintage Lady" The first in a series of mash notes to my favorite sewing bloggers, reverse-inspired by the Selfish Seamstress's sinister parade of nemeses (Sometime next week).
  • "A Life in Mail-Order Patterns": The story of a collection I acquired via Ebay that belonged to one woman who sewed from mail-order patterns from 1954 to 1990. Her size changed over the years; her love for simple shirtwaists did not. (Quite likely, as I've already photographed all 23 patterns).
  • "Hair Lessons, Part 2: It's All Good Hair." In the first part of this series, I chronicled my own cluelessness in all things hair-related. I want to change that both for myself and in anticipation of the arrival of Cartoonist Baby. So this post is a review of a book I bought ("It's All Good Hair") that teaches a variety of natural hairstyles for black children (including braids, twists, dreads and more). Plus my thoughts on the promising-but-flawed Chris Rock documentary Good Hair. (Fair to middling--this is such a complex topic I want to get it right!).
  • "Tutorial: Try on Patterns Before You Sew--Or Buy--Them!" This is the one I'm most excited about--it's a tutorial aimed at helping non-artists create their own personalized croquis for envisioning how patterns will look on their unique and fabulous figures! It'll be like the ones I use to sketch ideas and play with alterations and color, but a bit more basic. Better yet, it's illustrated with examples of a few of your favorite sewing bloggers (plus me and Masheka, as I wanted a male model in the mix)! I'm working up versions of how to do with both pen and paper and free online image software. (My top blogging priority!)
  • "On Pregnancy and Body Image." My personal take on pregnancy, and--you guessed, it--body image. (If I have time between massaging my puffy ankles and inspecting my new stretch marks to get to it).

  2. I've been blogging for so long that I don't have that backlog of ideas (normally). It does settle down a bit! Happily, I have enough ideas to make blogging fun. And I'm happy to wait for you to share these posts. I'm sure they will be lots of fun.

  3. ohhhh, I want to read the mail order pattern one. I have a small collection of vintage patterns and I love my mail order patterns the best. They just speak to me more or seem to have more of a history. Plus I love the idea that you could get a pattern mailed to you for a fee.

Also the croqui tutorial should be interesting though I am a skeptic that it could work as fabuously as you say it could. Plus drawing my "unique and fabulous figure" freaks me out a tiny bit. Honesty on paper. or the screen.

  4. I have drafts but maybe not quite that many! Prolific writing is obviously in your nature :) You've got some good topics lined up.

I think we're on the same circuit of classes - except that I didn't have a baby-wearing class, but I need one for the Moby wrap I just got!

  5. Ohh...I can't wait! They all sound good!

  6. I've been blogging since 2006 and I have about the same (28) draft posts for just one of my blogs. I also have a series on fashion influences from film and TV that I haven't even started to type in (though I do have them all written on paper with photo links noted.) Can't wait for the croqui one, so just hang in there, we can wait!

  7. Such exciting stuff here! I'm looking forward to what's coming. Your maternity writing is very very helpful. When I was pregnant, I found it was a lot easier to alter existing patterns or use patterns with buckets of ease because there's so many sad sad maternity patterns out there. You're making me believe that I can be even cuter the second time. :)

The most I've ever gotten backlogged was 3 posts. I'm a little OCD about clutter, in the virtual world as much in the real world. It's not uncommon for me to revise/rename posts a few times before I do post.

  8. I have a few drafts saved, but usually by the time I get to them I've changed my mind on the approach, so I start over. I think you're doing a really great job with your blog - I will certainly keep reading!

  9. This is the proverbial embarrassment of riches, I'd say! As someone relatively new to blogging, I would only say, pace yourself. I found that one posting a day (as opposed to more than one) was more than enough. I think it's great to keep an archive of ideas you can draw on. I'm usually just one idea ahead -- if that! You're doing such a great job!

  10. Holy cow, girl! I thought I wrote a lot, but you have got me beat by a thousand miles. That's cool, though, because I know I'll always have somewhere to go to read something inspiring.

I have a few new ideas of things I'd like to work on, I just have to find the time to sit down and draft a post. You've given me the urge.

  11. You're so organized! Most of mine are in my head. I try not to overindulge in blogging, I know Ill never stop. I attempt to limit myself to 4 posts a week.
Yeah, we will see how that works out.

You appear to have a wealth of content there. Post the list on a wall, get a dart aim and fire! :)

  12. Consider this a note encouraging you to finish up the maternity post on the moving target. Would love to hear your thoughts on that one!

  13. Ooh, what great ideas! Love them all, and the life in patterns sounds especially enticing! I have a backlog of blogs, too -- I like to jot down ideas in draft blog form so I don't lose them. I prune through them sometimes -- they don't always survive -- but I think it's a good way of keeping track of all those little ideas that might make great posts (though at 30 you have me beat!)

I'd love to hear from you! But no ads please--I'll just have to delete them.
